Real life vs. Television

I just watched most of the episode of The West Wing where Alan Alda (as Vinick) and Jimmy Smits (as Santos) have a debate as presidential hopefuls. Having just seen a million other real debates, this was kind of cool to watch. It was filmed as a real live debate with the camera style and angles as they should be. There was a deviance from this when both candidates grabbed wireless microphones and walked around a little more (this was not supposed to be a town meeting style debate), but it was fine. I have to say that even though this aired two years ago, the debate topics sounded like they were this year’s topics (illegal immigration and nuclear energy, for example). I wish I had kept up with the show better, but it was nice to catch this episode at least.

Zombie Apocalypse or Nuclear Apocalypse?

Which would you prefer? It might help to clarify whether the zombie apocalypse is based on an airborne virus or transmitted through contact. For argument's sake, let's say it was through contact. I think that makes the case pretty clear for the zombie apocalypse. With nuclear, there are issues with radiation and the world being messed up as a result. For the zombie apocalypse, watch "I am Legend" or "28 Days Later" and you get an idea of what things might be like. I planned to make a better case for it, but I'd hope for the zombies

The New Tivo

So we own a Series 2 Tivo which we can use to record shows our shows. We use it religiously and we love it since we can sit down and watch our shows whenever we want. We do like watching some shows "live" (like Heroes), but this time-shifting of shows help us really keep up. It also helps us limit the shows we follow (the Tivo only can record so much).

The new thing I have been taking advantage of is Hulu, CBS, NetFlix, and YouTube. I use YouTube to try and find short clips of things and NetFlix to try out old shows (like Airwolf and Buck Rogers) and catch up on shows I missed (Jericho). I've also found some shows on their network's site (like How I Met Your Mother) and others on Hulu (Chuck and Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles). I really like the different options to watch my shows, when I want to. I would prefer to have one stop shopping though. This might be possible with the  new development of CBS starting to put some shows on YouTube (with advertising) sounds promising.

The New Odd Couple

I think they got along better than Felix and Oscar ever did, but Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates are quite the pair. As part of a PR campaign for Microsoft, these commercials (the first and second ) were created to try and Microsoft seem more relatable. I found them to be particularly funny and wish they would continue. According to Microsoft, Jerry was only supposed to be on board for these couple commercials, although there was speculation that people were confused as to the point of the commercials. Perhaps things will change as the new "I'm a PC" commercial seems to not be very popular, and potentially more confusing. I personally hope they bring Seinfeld/Gates back.

Steve Fossett

He has been missing for over a year and it looks like he might now have been found. I have missed the stories of him going around the world in a balloon, a plane, or a jet pack (okay, he didn't get to this one, but this guy might). There was speculation that he might have gone off the radar (figuratively speaking) in order to lower his profile and maybe start over. While this makes for an interesting twist, it seems like things ended when his plane crashed. He will continue to be missed...

This is not about the VP debate

It is about what's on TV though. I haven't been watching as much TV yet, but I have caught Heroes, which seems to be starting off pretty strong. There is action and story and new twists on old characters. I especially like the mingling of the future heroes side-by-side with the present day heroes. Peter Petrelli looks so much better and cooler with that face long scar. I'm curious how Sylar will be used and I'm concerned that Elle is missing and  may not be back. I guess I'll have to my Kristen Bell fix from Gossip Girl - xoxo

London 2012 and Beyond!

So the Olympics have finally wrapped up with some exciting (4x400 women and basketball) and also lackluster (4x100 men and women, 5K men) performances by the Americans. Now it's time to evaluate the games. I'm guessing that softball and baseball are definitely out as sports, but how about adding some new sports to the mix? I'm not saying to take existing sports and make them Olympic sports (although that's not a bad idea - hello BMX Supercross), but how about combining or drastically changing existing sports to make them all new?

- I joked about synchronized pole vaulting in an earlier post. Imagine adding judging to the mix.
- 50 meter diving - imagine the twists/turns/flops/splashes that could result! The current scoring system would have to be re-vamped of course
- 50 meter mountain bike diving - This may fit more in the X-Games, but perhaps the two (Olympics and X-Games) should work more closely together. We could use more Flying Tomatoes doing the snowboard half-pipe
- Triathlon relay - each leg has a different athlete with specialized skills

I think that's it for my brainstorming this morning!

Laughing by the pool

Just a little picture of Rory hanging out by the pool laughing his little head off. Despite having his third tooth come in (first on top), he is extraordinarily good spirits...

Playing by Olympic Rules

This is a double-edged sword. Olympic baseball seems to have the right idea, but gymnastics are a little messed up.The rule I loved in baseball has to do with extra innings. I think starting in the 13th inning, each team gets runners on first base and second base, and can start anywhere in their batting order. If this rule were adopted in Major League Baseball, perhaps starting in the 7 inning, I might consider watching baseball. Gymnastics is quite a different matter. We've been watching with a lot of interest as the men and women fling themselves about on their various apparatuses, some with more skill than others. The other night though, Nastia Liukin and the 14 16 year old Chinese competitor He Kexin ended up with the same score, but due to Olympic rules, there could be only one gold medalist. By a tie-break, Nastia ended up with the silver.

I thought the Olympics were meant to bring countries and people together. This to me just points out some minor stupidity on the IOC's part. Perhaps they'll fix this, but perhaps not also...

Phelps Phascination

I love this guy! He seems like a great, hard-working, laid-back, and normal guy. He also happens to eat 8,000 to 10,000 calories a day and breaks world records in his spare time. I'm looking forward to seeing him in action more.

2008 Beijing Olympics - Gymnastics/Swimming

Heartbreaking and exciting, all rolled into one. I'm not talking about the faux excitement and sappy stories (not all are sappy though). Yesterday was truly enjoyable to watch.

We started out the evening with some lackluster excitement with women's gymnastics. They are quite explosive and talented, but the stupid announcers had to keep jinxing things with "This is so-and-so's best event" and "So-and-so has never stumbled here". Lo and behold, USA made mistakes. They were good enough to still qualify, but still. Perhaps we'll have to put the TV on mute later.

The swimming events were very nerve-wracking. Hoff, Phelps, and others were competing. Hoff was a surprise leader during her big race, only to lose it in the last few feet. Phelps led off the 400m freestyle relay, but the big story (real story) was the come from behind-stick-it-in-the-face-of-the-French win for the anchor Lezak(?). 3 time olympian, he pulled out what I'd call a miraculous win. And his team couldn't be happier. At home, I don't think we could have been more pumped either..

Facebook Anonymous

Hello, my name is Kelly and I have a Facebook problem. I can't get enough of it... The sad thing is that I'm not doing a whole lot there. It's not like I'm playing a ton of games or doing a lot of the "Kelly bought so-and-so for 1 bazillion dollars" or even sending a lot of flair (although I like the flair). I think part of it is the anticipation of who might have joined. Considering that my high school class couldn't organize itself for a reunion, this might be something that helps it happen, even if it's informal.

I'm looking for a 12 step program now. I'm not sure how well I'd do. While I like lists, change is my bitter enemy... :)

Terminator: Reboot

I realize this isn't the name of the new Terminator movie, but I think it might be applicable. I understand that the story for Terminator: Salvation will ignore the story of the third Terminator movie (with Nick Stahl and Claire Danes). I happened to like the third movie (at least the ending, which is weird I know), so I'm curious as to the reasons for this. Perhaps they just want flexibility in telling the story with Christian Bale's character, and perhaps they don't need to do too much except maybe a passing reference that only the Terminator faithful knows isn't official canon.

In any event, I look forward another reboot with Christian Bale leading the way. Batman seems to be doing just fine with him.

Post-Apocalyptic Brightness

I read something this morning (http://testpattern.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/08/06/1248640.aspx) that I found interesting. The blog touches on the portrayal of the future as not so bright in the movies. While futures can vary wildly from one vision (Planet of the Apes) to the next (Waterworld), they all seem to have in common some major catastrophe happening to the world. Technology run amok also seems to be a theme (I, Robot; Minority Report, Blade Runner) and it's this latter theme that I think it most realistic. No matter the technology, someone will always pervert it to their own negative use, but hopefully the positive uses will outweight the negative. I look forward to a car the drives me to work (in lieu of a Star Trek-like transporter), but not to watching out for evil/misguided androids lurking about.

Monday, Monday

Just another wonderful Monday here and not much to report. Having watched most of The Transporter 2 last night, I feel like I need to see more Jason Statham movies. We had seen The Bank Job (which is not a typical movie for him) and like it. The Transporter 2 seemed to be a fun movie and we felt we needed to find out what happened in the end. I've added both the original Transporter movie and Crank to my NetFlix queue to check them out now.

Wordscraper is no Scrabulous

Well, Scrabulous disappear from Facebook this week and was eventually "replaced" by Wordscraper (from the same developer brothers). Not merely a facelift, they've made some significant tweaks to scoring and gameplay. I just want to play Scrabble. Perhaps I need to check out the official Scrabble application, but I haven't heard great things. Or maybe I'll pull out the Scrabble board at home and we can play face to face...

October Road

I read that the cancelled series October Road was going to film a 15 minute finale to explain what happened and where things went with the characters. I love this idea. Having loved more than my fair share of soon-to-be-cancelled shows (Lyon's Den and Life As We Know It), I think this should almost be a requirement. It would also help if unaired shows were burned off either on TV (perhaps in a marathon) or made available online. They definitely should be made available via streaming services like NetFlix. Imagine knowing how things end up instead of wondering. I realize this could turn out like the last episode of Everwood where almost too many loose ends are neatly tied together quickly (and they had an hour!). Too bad I'm just a computer programmer and not in charge of a television network...

Smog Olympics

I wonder how much technology NBC will be using to clean up the images from Beijing to hide the amount of smog that is there. It sounds like it's a crap shoot on the air quality and that they only have some short term solutions. Seeding clouds to get more rain to removing 90% of the cars from the streets seems a little drastic. Perhaps a longer term solution should be in the making. Well, I've got to go make my tea in my Made In China mug...

Facebook connections

One might argue that using the Internet (or Facebook in this case) to connect with close friends is kinda weird and impersonal. I think that depending on how you do it, that could be the case. If it is the sole interaction with them, then yes, it probably is a problem. That being said, it can help you learn and bond with them on a different level. Whether it's sharing quizzed, seeing what their status says, or whatever, it's kinda cool.

I really like the ability to connect with old friends and acquaintances. Normally they are people I might not ever hear from again or just think about and never get around to contacting. With more and more (~250K/day?!) people joining, it makes re-connecting with people even easier.

The Dark Knight

Just saw this tonight at the drive-in and it was great. Definitely a darker movie than say, Iron Man, but still a good movie. A lot of story and also good performances by Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman. an overall fantastic cast. Nice number of effects, but not overwhelmingly so (The Batpod was very cool). A must see for die-hard fans and casual movie-goers alike.

Tuesday Work Day

Playing catchup; still working on Month End and trying to locate my top 3 priorities

Monday Work Day

Month end stuff, organization, Rutland receiving app, LOG app

A Blizzard of Blizzard products

I am so psyched! Diablo III was recently announced by Blizzard and it's about time. The game has been eagerly anticipated by fans of the original two titles. With StarCraft 2 coming out this year and WOW's Wrath of the Lich King also, it could prove to be a good couple years for Blizzard fanatics.

Garmin Nuvi - helpful little thing

We just got the Garmin Nuvi 650 last week and it's pretty cool. We haven't gone on any big trips in the last few days, but it is cool watching it in action. I imagine it will get a small work out down the road. Currently, we/I have it configured with a monster truck and Lee (a male Australian voice). Should be fun!

Mandatory Camp for Kids?

After our doorbell rang from a ring-and-run last night, I'm thinking that some (or maybe all) kids need to have more to do with their time. Perhaps a mandatory camp for them once school is out. They can have fun there, but they need to "place out" of it if they don't want to go. Placing out would involve sending a list of kids to each neighbor and seeing if they are a nuisance at all. If a kid is selected by any neighbor, then they go to camp. If "unknown" kid is selected, they all go until they fess up. This way they can police themselves and start to grow up.

Okay - I'm done now. Camp Anti-Boredom is a bad idea...

George Carlin

I couldn't believe the news that George Carlin had died. He was 71, but it seemed like he'd go on for so much longer. I used to watch him back in the day with his observational humor and I'm pretty sure that he helped contribute greatly to my 4 letter vocabulary. He will be missed.

Monday, June 23, 2008

Monday Work Day

Organize, then LOG application, Inventory Turns, D item checks

Reconnecting

I think that my joining of Facebook yesterday has rekindled a desire of mine to connect with old friends and to keep up with existing ones. Perhaps Facebook isn't the way it'll happen, but hopefully it will spark the interest enough to keep it going.

Facebook

I justed joined Facebook and am trying to get a bunch of friends to add me. It's an interesting experiment. I'm not sure if it'll stick, but we'll see.

Weekend Activities - None!

We actually have nothing to do this weekend except for Drunkfest and a minor buy party. It's nice to have a weekend off... Tomorrow morning we're off on a hike, but that's it. Next weekend will be a garage sale for big bucks, so now we'll just rest (see pic).

Monday Work Day

Priorities, To Do list, fog, and Dallas prep.

Weekend Activities

Quite the weekend - LARAC and family stuff on Saturday and then R's baptism and barbecue celebration afterwards. Great weather and great company made for a legen... wait for it... dary day. A special thanks to John for doing the cooking, and to Grandma Gwen and Grandma Janet for all their delicious contributions. Pictures will be uploaded to Kodak within the next few days.

Friday Work Day

Finalize Dallas tags and print, negative flow info, LOG application, fog, meetings, and pizza

Back to Blogging

After a brief dry spell, I'm back to blogging. Perhaps it's because I'm feeling generous after winning big on lottery tickets and want to share my wealth, or maybe I don't want to disappoint my fan(s)...

First - the lottery tickets: After investing $2 in raffle tickets, I won around 20 scratch off tickets (~$50 worth). After a hard night of scratching and removing tickets from the cardboard, we ended up with just $11 for our troubles. I know this is a 500%+ return on the investment, but we could have won over $140,000. I kinda feel like the Deal or No Deal contestant who opens one too many briefcases and then tries to make up for it by opening the rest.

Next - not that I'm going to get one (because I still love my Samsung i760), but the iPhone 3G looks great. A plethora of third apps to be available, true GPS, and a new price point make this really appetizing. Of course the new price point is wiped out and more by the $10 increase in the monthly charges ($240 for 2 year contract), but I'm guessing few will notice or care.

Lastly - little (or not so little) Rory is still awesome. He's getting so much more interactive and so much more personality. Of course this means he's also getting to have opinions also some attitudes.

We are looking forward to the weekend of family time and Rory's baptism. It's been a lot of prep for it and there's still much more to do, but it will be good to see everyone.

My wife still loves me...

Deborah was great in Atlantic City. I think that we both preferred her regular hits to the showtunes, but she put on a decent show. It would have been great to see her in her hey-day.

Bonus for us was that Suzanne won $20 on penny slots! Yay!

Saturday, May 24, 2008

My Wife Loves Me...

Very, very much. First, she told me a while back that Deborah/Debbie Gibson was performing at Harrah's in Atlantic City for a few weeks. Then she agreed to go with me! We'll be dropping the little one off at Grandma Ely's house for the night while we go watch Deborah perform showtunes from the plays she's been in plus some of her classics. I am very much looking forward to it. More later!

Dancing With The Stars Finale

The title was hers to lose, but Kristi Yamaguchi held on and fended off strong performances by Jason and Cristian. Some of her perfect scores might have been debatable, but she did finish well. My favorites, defensive end Jason Taylor, did very well, but just couldn't top her.

It'll be interesting to see which B/C/D-list celebs are up for next season. And I still love Tom Bergeron as host!

American Idol Finale

97.5 million votes (roughly 500,ooo people - my estimate) were tallied and by a 12 million vote margin, the right David (Cook) won. David A was his usual "awe-shucks" self and Cook seemed pretty moved by things. Hopefully he will bring out a great album right out of the gate. All the madness begins again next January!

Lack of Excitement

I apologize to my reader(s) for not posting as much this week. I'm not entirely sure why I had so much difficulty, but I will work on improving my updates.

Bully Hill and points west

Quite an exhausting weekend for us as we went out west (to the Finger Lakes) to go wine tasting with some friends. A wide variety of places and experiences were found. I think we all had our favorites and everyone bought plenty of wine.

Looking forward to mini-golf!

Iron Man

Robert Downey, Jr. is awesome and he makes this movie. The effects were incredible, the story was great, but RDJ's humor really comes through.

Looking forward to Iron Man 2 (2010?)!

AI and DWTS

Marisa went home last night on DWTS. She made it further than most expected. Syesha was bascially the same situation. She was in the bottom two at first, but improved and did very well.

Now onto the battle of the Davids!

Wednesday Work Day

Not great, but got some Production Tracking stuff done; and also started the revamp of the prototype time tracking app; hopefully looking forward to a good Thursday

Tuesday Work Day

Crappy start to the day so far (SQL update failed - network issue?); need to rerack priorities and work on Prototype app

I'm Famous! (almost)

As I mentioned previously, I sent a message to the Reality TV expert at MSNBC. He picked my question as one to respond to! Check it out:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24568970/ (I'm the Kelly from Queensbury, NY)

This is so very cooln

Laughter

Rory laughed for the first time this weekend. It was awesome. He liked a noise I was making and really got a kick out of it. He's getting so much more expressive it's really cool. As Suzanne said though, it would be great if he could give us a hint about being hungry before starting to cry.

Monday Work Day

Reboot of Friday:
Finalize web requests; work on ranking in DP; roll out Rush WO app for testing; PO Req rpt; price export stuff (DONE!); priorities; meetings (DONE); and prototype project

Friday Work Day

Finalize web requests; work on ranking in DP; roll out Rush WO app for testing; PO Req rpt; price export stuff; priorities; meetings; and prototype project...

Wait Wait!

Suzanne and I just saw Wait Wait! Don't Tell Me! at Proctors Theatre and it was a blast. We were there about two hours and saw Peter Sagal, Carl Kassel, Charlie Pierce, Amy Dickinson, and Mo Rocca. Peter, Carl and the panelists were a riot. It was a great ab workout.

I think we're going to have to see where they go around here again and if not, we'll have to try and make it to Chicago to go to another taping. The show airs this Saturday at 11 am.

Sleeping through the night

Not to jinks ourselves, but Rory seems to be sleeping through the night. While I liked getting up to feed him in the middle of the night (sometimes I liked it deep down), I won't mind not having to do it!

He is just so freakin' adorable!

Thursday Work Day

Finalizing DP/price exports; work on DP tweaks; finish first pass at Rush WO app; work on priority list for tomorrow's meeting(s)

Being cut short by Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me!

Buh-bye Mr. Tambourine Man!

Thank goodness, I can continue to watch American Idol. I will see that since she's picked it up a bit recently, it didn't seem right that Syesha should be standing next to Jason in the bottom two, but neither of the Davids deserved it either.

Sanjaya 2008 is gone and let the best performances come out!

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Wednesday Work Day

Finishing up Rush WO; try to finish DP/Price exports; then work on priorities and yet more Sales stuff

AI and DWTS

Jason Castro must go! It would be so wrong if this didn't happen.

Mario went home on DWTS. No much of an opinion there. It was great seeing Apolo Anton Ohno and Julianna Hough dancing together again. They are an ultra-cute couple.

I also must continue to dwell on Rascal Flatts. They were in the audience at AI, but then 30 minutes later were performing on DWTS. Huh? Perhaps the TV Reality Export from MSNBC will be able to help out (I sent a message)...

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Tuesday Work Day

Rush WO app; finish up web requests; 29 label printing; spec LOG application; plus some meetings!

Thursday Work Day

Priorities, priorities, priorities! Also, spec LOG appliation; need to add PO Req reports and Rush WO app to schedule

America has voted...

and apparently has A LOT of stoners. Come on people! Seriously? Jason Castro doesn't even make the bottom two? IMHO, he's basically turned into this years Sanjaya and he's in the bottom four?! I will admit that Brooke had some issues, but at least she exerted some genuine effort.

Back from Pennsylvania

The cousins finally met! We had a great time seeing Jackson, Shawn, and Kate. We look forward to their trip up here next. Here's a link to some photos from the trip.

http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=529uvb8c.79h5jtaw&x=0&y=5cz9px&localeid=en_US

Cute little bedmate

Isn't he just too cute and adorable?

New tech skills

As I lie here listening to Rory grunt himself back to sleep, I started
randomly thinking about things. A conversation with Shawn is really
making me think about my tech skill set and how to improve it.
ColdFusion has been my focus and specialty for a few years now, but is
a niche that few know (especially in the Qby area). I need to expand
ny knowledge to other web tech skills. AJAX is an obvious choice as it
can complement CF. I also think MS Silverlight could be complementary
as well, and would also provide a step towards MS tech, which can't
hurt. I need to figure out the best way to go about thia and how to
make time for it. Thanks for listening...

End of Saturday in PA

Had a good day - nice walk with everyone and just an easy going day. Why are we so tired though? I'm heading to sleep to make sure tomorrow isn't too long.

In Pennsylvania!

Suzanne, Rory and I are in PA visiting Rory's cousin Jackson (and my brother Shawn and sister-in-law Kate). It's cute watching to two different cousins interact.

Friday End of Work Day

Got the big report done, but need to work on more. Going to go fertilize and then head to see S & K.

Friday Work Day

Pretty low key - finish up reporting for P&T project and then work on priorities; need to figure out a better way of tracking all requests (maybe a quick tracking like the quick notes)

The little rovers that could

I just read an article on the Spirit and Opportunity rovers that have gone well beyond their original mission length (4+ years instead of 90 days). I love that they just keep going and hope they continue to get funding. Check them out at http://www.space.com/marsrover/

Thursday End of Work Day

Got the majority of the project done and the Sequence import views, as well as other fog of war stuff - basically a good day...

Too funny (from Engadget)

Thursday Work Day

Big project for the day is Time and Note tracking app for Prototype. Also working on data import for Sequence pilot project as well as a data exports for Design Portal (I know, doesn't it sound exciting?!).

My blog's RSS feed

Here's my RSS feed for anyone using a reader/aggregator:
